Spring Fever

Were you surprised over the late season Tahoe weather; snow, high winds, and cold temps? Some have been loving the extended ski season. Others are pretty much ready to move on. After over 6 months of snow in the Tahoe basin, it’s enough to give you spring fever.
GLOBAL WARMING THE CAUSE?
It is strange, don’t ya think? All this crazy weather... Is it global warming, or is it El Nino? Is it just a fluke…or is it normal? Or is it a combination of all of the above? These questions led me to do a little research via, you guessed it, google. According to: http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMONtsnf.pl?ca8758 (The Western Regional Climate Center at the Desert Research Institute) there is a history of significant monthly snowfall averages in Tahoe in April and even May.
HISTORY PROVES..
The year with the most April snow total on record is a whopping 75” in 1958 and coming in second is 68” in 1985. I am old enough to remember coming to Tahoe that spring of 85 with friends to ski and the drive up Highway 50 was like driving into a cave, with snow lining the streets so high you could not see over the sides of it. April's top snow fall history goes down from there; 67” in 1963, 62” in 1967 and more recently 61” in April 2003. May’s snowfall story is quite a bit different than April’s with the most May snowfall in Tahoe happening in 1964 with 33”. Still a huge amount for May and it could very well happen again. But who’s counting their chickens? (And how can those chickens hatch in these temps anyhow?) I’m not holding my breath (that I can see when I breathe) because I, like many others who adore winter and the thought of fluffy white snow, am actually ready and waiting to be thawed out.
ARE YOU BIKINI READY?
Last year at this time I’m sure I was already hanging at the beach and well on my way toward my closest version of a bikini ready bod. But right now, in 20-10, not so much. I’m still in my winter hibernation phase. (I think due to the weather my body is being tricked into thinking I need to put on more pounds to survive through the winter, like bears do).
HOW'S YOUR GARDEN?
In March during a short glimpse of spring, I had this notion that it may be safe to do some yard work. I don’t know why I fall for this every year, but after 17 years as a Tahoe resident, I still manage to. I dutifully cleared all of the winter leaves and clipped my roses back. I even went so far as to pull an impressive looking weed pile only to have my plans foiled the very next day by, none other than, spring snow. I feel sorry for my front yard, every time it gets a chance to grow, and green is making an appearance or a flower blooms, it is smothered by snow once again.
JACK IN THE BOX IS NOT GOOD DIET FOOD
There are many things that I would like to get moving on that are spring related but can’t seem to motivate myself due to the cold and snow that just keeps coming back. I began a very vigorous diet and workout routine, inspired by an invitation to a friend’s June 30th birthday event, where lake camping and boating will require the wearing of a bathing suit, which lasted approximately 6 days. But during those 6 days I was eating right, plenty of fruits and veggies, and I even tried out a few new healthy recipes. Unfortunately since, I have done a steep backslide, on a weekend trip down to the Bay Area surviving almost solely on Jack and the Box. (Fajita Pita’s aren’t that bad…right?) Ugh.
SPRING FEVER CONTEST
This subject couldn’t be a more perfect segue into our next Diamond Peak online contest titled fittingly “Spring Fever”. Over a period of 5 weeks beginning on May 3rd until June 6th, we will be giving away really cool weekly prizes for submitting spring related tips on our pages at www.facebook.com/diamondpeak or www.twitter.com/diamondpeak. Just for reading my blog, I will give you a sneak peak into our first subject, before it is it officially announced so you can get an insiders jump on what you might submit. Week One, we will be asking for your Spring Workout Tips, (the Lord knows I need them). How are you getting in shape for the summer? Just for posting your workout tip on our page, you are entered in that week’s drawing. You can enter a new tip as often as you wish, but you can’t enter the same tip multiple times. Every time you post a tip, you will get another contest entry, and if you post a picture or video along with your tip, we will give you an extra entry for that tip! Our prize for week one will be a $50 gift certificate to the Sports Basement. We will be picking winners at random, so you don’t have to come up with the best of the best, any helpful tip will do. Every week we will have a different prize that coordinates with the type of spring tip we are looking for.
THINK SPRING
With last week’s storms waning, it looks as if sunshine is on the horizon, so start thinking spring and you may win some great prizes! You may even send some positive vibes my way and succeed at inspiring me to get my butt (and other areas) moving toward thinking spring. I will be looking forward to hearing all of your suggestions, and possibly even trying some of them out. Have fun!
